Testing Day Preparation

How long will my child need to be out of school on the day of testing?

Please make plans for your child to be out of school all day the day of testing. We will provide you with an excuse for your child’s absence from school.

What time should we arrive the morning of testing?

If your child is testing at one of the two NLC locations, make plans to arrive at 8:15. Testing begins promptly at 8:30. Please allow plenty of time for getting ready and for travel. It is important not to rush your child on the day of testing. This can produce anxiety in some children and negatively influence the assessment results.  If your child is testing on-site at his or her school, please treat the day like a typical school day.  Your assessment counselor will pick up you child from his or her classroom and will begin testing promptly at 8am.

Can I leave my child and run errands while he/she is being tested?

This depends upon your child.  For young children and those who become anxious when separated from mom or dad, we request that you remain on-site during testing.  If your child is comfortable with being separated from you, then you are free to leave during testing.  We ask that you keep your cell phone handy for questions and/or updates throughout the day.  And please be prepared to pick up your child for lunch.  We have found that having a lunch break off-site with mom or dad is very helpful for our clients.

Will my child be given breaks during the testing day?

Yes, your child will have a break for lunch from approximately 12:00-1:00pm. We recommend taking a lunch break off-site as it helps children and adolescents take a mental break from testing.  Short breaks may also occur at various times throughout the day if your child needs a chance to stretch or have a snack. Make sure to have a healthy snack and drink available for your child.

How long will testing take?

The length of testing will be determined on an individual basis depending on your child’s specific diagnostic needs and your child’s individual abilities on each assessment. Typically, when testing begins at 8:30 and includes a one-hour break for lunch, we are usually able to finish up between 3 and 4pm.

Is there anything else I need to do in order to prepare my child for the day of testing?

Give your child all of the prescribed medication(s) he or she takes on a typical day.

If applicable, ensure that your child wears prescription eyewear and hearing aids.

Avoid giving your child any over-the-counter medications for symptom relief (coughing, runny nose, etc.). These medications can cause side-effects that could impede your child’s performance on the assessments. If your child is sick on the day of testing, it is probably best to cancel. See our cancellation policy.

Ensure that your child gets a good night’s sleep and eats a nourishing breakfast before arriving on the day of testing.  It is important to tell your child why they are coming for an assessment.  We usually recommend telling them “the purpose of the assessment is to find out what you are good at and what is hard for you.  Everyone has strengths and everyone has weaknesses.  Learning about yours will help us make decisions about how to help you learn (make friends, not worry so much, etc.)”  It is also helpful to relate stories about your own strengths and weaknesses and how they impacted you as a child.

Payment

Do you accept insurance?

We accept private pay only. Clients may choose to pay with cash, check, or credit card (VISA or Mastercard only). Some insurance companies may offer reimbursement for assessment services with a receipt outlining the services rendered, which your counselor can provide you.

Do you have a payment plan for Assessments?

The payment plan is as follows: 50% of the total fee is due at the Parent Interview. The remaining 50% is due the day of testing before testing begins.

Follow-Up Services

What types of referrals and/or follow-up services do you offer?

We will provide you with referral sources specifically tailored to your child’s assessment results. Such referrals may include, but are not limited to, play therapy for your child, family therapy, a neurological evaluation by a medical doctor, a medication evaluation by a medical doctor, speech and language therapy, special education services provided through public or private schools, or other specific services that may be deemed necessary as a result of the assessment process.

You may also request your counselor to attend your child’s ARD or Parent-Teacher meetings. Your counselor’s fee for attendance at these meetings is $150 an hour.

Reasons for Testing

What can I learn about my child’s behaviors as a result of this psycho-educational assessments process?

Our assessment process evaluates children for a variety of psychological and academic concerns including: ADHD, ADD, Learning Differences, Gifted and Talented Placement, learning style preferences, depression, and anxiety. Given the counselors’ specific and extensive backgrounds in child and family counseling, they can also provide parents with suggestions for improving their child’s social and family functioning, as well as parenting strategies tailored to the child’s unique make-up.
