Kindergarten Readiness

Is my child ready for kindergarten?

More and more parents are making the decision to delay their child’s entry to Kindergarten. This decision is typically based on the child’s birth date and sometimes a recommendation from a preschool teacher. New Leaf Clinic recognizes that your child is a unique individual. We provide specific assessments designed to assist parents in this important decision. In response to various levels of inquiry and needs from families and children, we have developed three Kindergarten Readiness Assessment options:

Assessment Batteries

Basic Developmental Battery

For parents who want an answer to the question, “Is my child ready to start kindergarten?” Includes:

  • Gesell Developmental Observation
  • Written Feedback
Developmental Plus

Ideal for parents who desire a more in-depth developmental assessment of their child, an opportunity to discuss their questions and concerns and receive counselor recommendations during a 45-minute feedback session. Includes:

  • Child Background Information Form
  • Gesell Developmental Observation
  • Written Feedback
  • Face-to-Face Feedback Session
Developmental- Behavioral Battery

When your decision to begin or delay kindergarten entry is complicated by questions related to your child’s behavior, ability to obey authority figures, and/or relationship difficulties with peers and adults, this package is ideal. Along with an extensive developmental assessment, we will provide specific feedback related to how best to meet your child’s social, behavioral, and academic needs within the context of your parent-child relationship. We can also rule out an attention-deficit disorder, or make recommendations for more extensive assessments to investigate any additional concerns you may have. Due to a young child’s (ages 5 and under) natural inability to remain focused and attentive for long periods of time, we recommend this initial screening for attention-deficit disorders before any further testing is pursued. Includes:

  • Gesell Developmental Observation
  • Child Behavior Checklist
  • Child Behavior Checklist Teacher Rating Form (for the preschool teacher)
  • Parent Stress Index
  • Attention Deficit Disorders Evaluation Scale- Second Edition Home and School Version
  • Written Feedback
  • Face-to-Face Feedback Session
